'Pull Over', Will It Be The Law?

H.B. 402 just passed in the House and this could potentially become a big headache for bicyclists in general. Now it is on to the Senate.

The bill states that it "requires an operator of a vehicle causing a line of five or more vehicles behind the operator's vehicle to: turn off the highway where a safe turn-out exists."

The bicycle, by definition of law, is a vehicle, so this means if you have five or more vehicles behind you on a narrow strip, you, (if this becomes law) are required to pull over to the side of the road.

This bill has caused quite a stir on the Mayor's Bicycle Advisory Committee.

However, after reading through the bill I noticed it mentioned two important points:

It affects vehicles on any highway.

As such, bicycles will not be prone to take the entire lane of traffic on the highway since the the average speed is typically around 45-50 MPH on the highway. If you want to take the lane in those conditions, you are asking for a ghost bike.

Utah State Code 72-1-102

(7) "Highway" means any public road, street, alley, lane, court, place,
viaduct, tunnel, culvert, bridge, or structure laid out or erected for
public use, or dedicated or abandoned to the public, or made public in an
action for the partition of real property, including the entire area within
the right-of-way.

Turn off the roadway wherever sufficient area for a safe turn-out exists

Arguments have been made that the cyclist would be forced from the road into unsafe conditions, however the Bill itself states turning off only when it is safe to do so.

It would be beneficial if we could hear/read/see the intentions behind this bill, but since we can't I am not opposed to this bill thus far because I haven't read any convincing arguments.. and no, losing momentum is not a convincing argument. It is the same argument used for running red lights and stop signs. Track stand is your friend.

Edit: So there are some mistakes in some of my post, however, I think the reasoning behind this bill still needs to be clarified before an alarm is sounded.

Silver Bomber for the U-Bomb

IMG_8726.jpg

In anticipation for the U-Bomb rerelease, I bought myself a $20 d.i. special mini and have started fixing it up for the U-Bomb, fixing holes in the tires, brakes and of course repainting it a silver theme complete with duct taped hand grips.
Thus far it rides pretty crappy, and might even have a bad frame. It needs to have all sorts of mods done to it, but it has amazing shocks so the downhill bomb will be a bouncy bomb.

Welcome to the Mansion.

Picture 1.jpg

I arrived after Mayor Becker had pulled in on his bicycle and surveyed the mansion with its immediate surroundings. I noticed immediately, what an amazing area! I never knew that area very well, and now I think it has great potential. Yes, the Interstate screams by, but it turns into a whisper when you are taking in all of the surroundings.

It was well attended. People were interested in this mansion. I saw several other bicyclist at the tour, greeting them in passing. My first suggestion is a bicycle rack so that I don't end up dropping my keys in the grate by the river, as that was where all the cyclist were locking up.

I don't really have any other suggestions, however I imagine as it develops, I will think of something.

.. and no there was no free food. To feed a group of that size would have costed hundreds of dollars.. it was packed with people. I did notice bathrooms with showers. A commuter feature?

Keep your eyes out in the various news sources, I think this may develop into a location that deals with something to do with bicycles as assuredly as the Mayor pulled up on his bicycle to attend the event.

35º and a Visit to the West-Side Mansion.

Picture 3.jpg

Remember when 35º was really cold? That was last summer. Then the seemingly endless snow winter readjusted our mindset. Now a high of 43º is beginning to look very acceptable bicycling weather.

Since the weather is beyond 20º, I am going to go visit west-side mansion for the tour and to let bicyclists' presence be known. Free food would be nice too, but hey no complaints if there are no appetizers, I still need to work off all this winter fat.

If you haven't met Mayor Becker yet or want to support the Jordan River Parkway come out and let the bicyclists' presence be known.

Fisher Mansion open house
